Been feeling sad lately. Not depressed, just sad. So I've been sitting with it, letting it be, making friends with it, experiencing my emotions, sinking into them, knowing them. As Anthony deMello would put it, the sadness is in "Me" but "I" am not the sadness; I simply observe its presence and try to understand its origin. It's complex and there's probably more than one.

I miss the house some; my living situation is good, but it's not the same. Working at the UW's O.K., but it's not the same either. I'm lonely at times too and desire companionship. I feel suspended, stuck in the in-between of where I've been and where I want to be. I desire a sense of belonging, a place of purpose where what I do matters. I'm doing some things to get me there, praying they pan out.

Human pain does not let go of its grip at one point in time. Rather, it works its way out of our consciousness over time. There is a season of sadness. A season of anger. A season of tranquility. A season of hope.
- Robert Veninga

An ounce of cheerfulness is worth a pound of sadness to serve God with.
- Thomas Fuller
