Pearl Jam to the rescue

Just picked up the latest Pearl Jam CD. I haven't bought anything of theirs in ages but heard that this one was real good - a throwback to their early work: rockin' guitars accentuated by the frenetic vocals of Eddy Vedder. It certainly is that - I like it. It's always been difficult to understand Vedder's lyrics though, so after a few listens I decided to read the liner notes and figure out what he's singing about. The opening song, "Life Wasted," could be an anthem for my present situation. Interesting how I came by this album at the same time I'm dealing with my anxiety of being around my ex...

I seen the home inside your head,...
All locked doors and unmade beds.
Open sores unattended
Let me say just once that

I have faced it,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

I escaped it,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

Having tasted,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

~

Darkness comes in waves,... tell me,why invite it to stay?

You're warm with negativity,
Yes, comfort is an energy,...
But why let the sad song play?

I have faced it,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

I escaped it,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

Having tasted,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

Oh I erased it,... A life wasted,...
I'm never going back again.

"I have faced it,... I escaped it,... Having tasted,... Oh I erased it,... A life wasted,..." At first I took this as him/me speaking about the other person/my ex. (The righteous, indignant part of me rising to the occasion!) But then it occurred to me that maybe the life he was referring to was his own. That put a spin on things - one I could relate to. I had faced her crazy life (which would have been mine as well); I escaped it (though painfully); and having tasted it, (realizing that it would be my) life wasted, I erased it (a work in progress), and I'm never going back again.

Another thing I can hang on to in the midst of the craziness.
