Rainier 2011: #2, June 23-25

Got back to climbing Mt. Rainier last weekend. After such a (relatively) warm trip on Denali, Rainier was cold, especially on summit morning. Got to the top this time with Seth and four climbers. We had a bit of a surprise on the descent though: an immense crevasse bridge apparently had collapsed 20-30 minutes after we'd crossed it on our ascent, stranding all other parties below it. One climber suffered a broken leg due to the collapse, no one else was seriously hurt. For our part, we were stranded on steep ground without any clear way down. Ultimately I lowered four climbers over the lip of the 50-foot overhanging ice cliff into the crevasse where they scrambled through the debris of the massive snow bridge to the other side. Then I rappelled into the gaping maw myself - quite exciting that!
